How to employ the Magical Calendar
Last night, it came to mind that I ought to provide a key to the elements which comprise each “Today’s Magical Calendar” entry (having composed it under the assumption that everyone reading it would just know what to do with the information).
1) Date: this contains both our standard date, and the calculated corresponding date in the Athenian Calendar, Deities and festivals associated with the date. Frankly, I’m proud of this little bit, having gone through all the conflicting information in the literature to make it as accurate as possible, and to conform to the Lunar Calendar (more so than the Athenians did, frankly). The dates here fall differently than those posted by other Hellenic groups, for the most effective Magical effect.
2) The phase of and position of the Moon; besides the information you can find in any almanac, this also takes into account the movement into the 28 Mansions of the Moon, based on both the Picatrix and Cornelius Agrippa. The Mansions are presently more important to Arabic and Hindu Astrological calculations. I have found that they greatly aid in choosing the proper time to initiate specific spell-work.
3) Planetary Hours of the Day: Rather than having to flip back and forth through references, here they are. Remember, the length of a planetary hour changes each day (you need to figure out the number of minutes from Sunrise to Sunset, which you divide by 12 to calculate the minutes contained in each hour, and to do the same for the evening hours between that sunset and the next day’s sunrise) with the exception of the two Equinoxes.
4) Astrological position: A rough guide to where all the inner Planets are, and their position and movement through the Zodiac. This gives you a rough idea of the Planetary interplay, when without an Ephemeris.
5) Observation: Taking all the above into consideration, some suggestions as to what sorts of work may best be performed on that day.

He was also considered to be the Angel that delivered the Pentagram ring to King Solomon. Reveals and instructs, presence brings victory, healing. Other systems use Adoniel (He of the Lord), who is associated with luck and fortune, or Michael.

Lammas is Coming !
Despite countless holidays, real or invented, being converted to shopping opportunities, and agriculture being forced out of New Jersey by the building of unattractive “townhouses” (lacking a town in which to dwell), there are still a few free range celebrations, fine excuses for a summer gathering of friends. Throw in an interest in Alice Waters and the slow food movement, and you have the perfect combination to honor the first harvest festivals, Pagan or not.
Lammas(loaf mass), or the Gaelic Lughnasdh (commemoration of Lugh), celebrates the first, or earliest permissible harvests being brought in from the fields, and falls on July 31/ August 1, or when the Sun enters 15 degrees of Leo (August 5 this year), or the first full Moon of August (also the 5th this year, but this date is variable). A complex of symbols surround this period. Lugh is one of the Celtic solar deities, who may be considered as alive in the grain, and sacrificed by it’s harvest and processing, as in the traditional song “John Barleycorn is Dead” (you may be familiar with the classic recording by Traffic), but the grain crop itself is embodied in the corn dolly, a figure braided from the first sheaf of grain cut from the field. (similar in Mesoamerica corn god)
In Ireland, this was also the time for “tailltean”, handfasted trial marriages between couples which span a year and a day. For devotees of Lugh, it was a time to engage in competitive races and other feats of skill and strength, feasting, and ending the day with a bonfire. So, the elements of a successful Lammas celebration bear a more than slight resemblance to prize day at summer camp.
This brief sketch provides more than ample decorating tips. Your color theme is yellow and green (just like my High School’s colors), and fresh produce, fresh greenery; think of Thanksgiving, without all the color washed out. While wheat is grown in New Jersey, fresh corn and all its variations will be far easier to find. Try to prepare a series of dishes made with locally grown produce; this is your chance to put together a vegan, or at least a meatless meal, to recuperate from all the backyard barbecues.
Just like summer camp, someone should be events director, to sign up participants for competitions; foot races, swimming trials, that sort of thing. The winners should be crowned with green wreaths of corn leaves, or wheat. Don’t forget to exhaust the children present with their own competitions. Considering the tragic demise of John Barleycorn, wacking a piñata would be a perfect complement to the events of the day.
As this celebration is so concerned with grain crops, you should provide plenty of bread (and beer). The bread can be shaped into the form of Lugh (think of a giant holding a club), and is either passed along to each person to consume a piece, or torn and tossed into the fire, along with the memory of uncompleted tasks.
Yes, if you can manage it in your circumstances, a bonfire is key. Do all the usual bonfire things around it. Toss in sandalwood, mastic, or pine resin. Give guests slips of paper to write out regrets, or hopes for prosperity, which they can add to the blaze. Use the opportunity to take a relationship to the next stage (yes, I think we’re moving in together). You could close the evening out with a cantrip from Scotland, recited on this day: “Corn and bread, food & flocks, wool & cloth, health and strength, peace & plenty”.

Monday, 12 July, 2 Metageitnion, dedicated to the Agathos Daimon, 1st day after New Moon, Moon (Ruler of the Day) moves into Leo, moving rapidly through the 10th Mansion of the Moon, Al Jabhah/Algebhah during the day, good for love and friendship, thwarts criminal activities and evil intentions into the 11th Mansion of the Moon, Al Zubrah/Azobra, which is good for reversing negative opinions and judgments.
Planetary Hours of the Day commence with the Moon, Night begins with Venus, Mercury in Leo, Venus in Virgo, Mars in Virgo, Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Virgo, all Direct. In general, this is a perfect day for sincere discussions which will produce results, not hurt feelings, but you have to work at it, and every sort of spell-work to bring peace, calm, and healing.

Today's magical Calender
Sunday, 11 July, 1 Metageitnion, a day for honoring your personal/ancestral deities, New Moon in Cancer and the 9th Mansion of the Moon Al Tarf/ Atarf, which makes this an appropriate day for baneful and destructive forms of magic.
Planetary Hours of the Day commence with the Sun, Night begins with Jupiter. Mercury in Leo, Venus in Virgo, Mars in Virgo, Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Virgo (Ruling Planet), all Direct. The grouping of Venus, Mars and Saturn in Virgo, and their aspect to the position of the Moon in Cancer, do create something of a perfect storm for those who might wish to effectively engage in more spiteful work (not that I am suggest any such thing). It’s the sort of day the lends power to the reptilian brain.

Today's magical Calender
Saturday, 10 July, 30 Hekatombaion, the Pananthenia would generally be finished by this day, offerings are left for Hekate at the crossroads, 2nd night of the Dark Moon, moving into Pisces and the 8th Mansion of the Moon, Al Nathra/Ahaathra, governing positive aspects of love and happiness, but not advantageous in legal matters.
Planetary Hours of the Day commence with Saturn, Night begins with Mercury. Mercury in Leo, Venus in Virgo, Mars in Virgo, Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Virgo (Ruling Planet), all Direct. In general, not a great day for personal finances, but a good day for working with (or setting) the parameters in a relationship.

Today's Magical Calender
Saturday, 3 July, 23 Hekatombaion, no special dedication, Waning Moon 6th day after Full, in Aries, moving from the 28th Mansion of the Moon Al Risha/Arrexhe into the 1st Al Sharatain/Alnath, which is good for dealing with complex systems, regulations, technical matters. Planetary Hours of the Day commence with Saturn, Night begins with Mercury. Mercury in Cancer, Venus in Leo, Mars in Virgo, Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Virgo (Ruling Planet), all Direct.
Even though this is a holiday weekend, this is a good day to draft technical or legal materials, but not so great for dealing with others. While the Moon in Aries and the 1st Mansion work well with Jupiter, Saturn squaring the Moon today (ruled by Saturn, and in Virgo) tends to set a very strident tone to most conversations. Be prepared to navigate an abundance of “expert” opinions.
Magically, this is a good day to set self-serving plans into motion, to thwart other’s plans, and generally lay down the law.

Aradia:Gospel of the Witches a bibliographical musing
Most of you are, I'm sure, familiar with the basic story of Charles Geoffrey Leland and his compilation entitled "Aradia" (it being a vangelo, "gospel" of the Witches passed along to him by a Florentine informant, Maddelana). In truth, a study of the fair copy manuscript by Mario & Dina Pazzaglini 1998 showed that a potion of the material was culled from previous works on magic by the author (such as Etruscan Magic and Roman Remains). It had sat with his publisher, David Nutt, for several years before finally being published in 1899, then ignored until the mid-20th century.
This first printing is, in the words of the booktrade, scarce (and desirable). Even with the rise of Internet sales, I wasn't able to posses a copy until 2005 (and trust me, I had been searching long and hard). The standard bibliographies and bookseller listings repeat the same tidbits of information; the scarcity, and tales of the book being ignored or suppressed after publication. I've yet to find any concrete information on the size of the print run, but the comparables for this period would be in the 1000 copy range. However...
Quite a few copies are now on the market, at very fancy (though merited) prices. This allows one to easily compare various copies, which has led to an intersting observation; there is more than one first edition (or at least more than one state withinn the printing of this edition).Above are the two cover versions.
It would seem that there might have been two press runs, which would be an odd thing if the book was so unwanted in the marketplace (why throw good money after bad)? It does also lead to the unpleasant (to a collector) question of which first is the first first. Pehaps someone in the bindery just forgot to stamp the front title on this particular copy, in which case this would still be a different issue state.
I suspect, however, that, even though there is only one extant book review from the time of issue, that the book was a bit more popular than is generally credited, and it was necessary for David Nutt to go back to press to satisfy demand.
Today's Magical Calender
Friday, 2 July, 22 Hekatombaion, no particular dedication, Waning Moon, 5th day after Full, in Pisces, moving into the 28th Mansion of the Moon Al Risha (Batn/Arrexhe, good for increase, travel, love. Bad for cherished things.
Planetary Hours of Day commence with Venus, Night begins with Mars.
Mercury in Cancer, Venus in Leo (Ruling Planet), Mars in Virgo, Jupiter in Aries, Saturn in Virgo, all Direct. The effect of the Moon occupying Al Risha is affected by it being in opposition to Mars, making this the sort of day when you either; are asked to make a long term loan of a treasured object; or, you will be asked for something to be returned, old forgotten bills will rear their heads, that sort of thing.
